Rose C. Mestas, 92 of Trinidad, CO died on March 6, 2023, surrounded by family. Born on February 24, 1931, in Tioga, CO to Celedon and Ruby Vigil, she was the third of 8 children.
Rose was a tomboy and loved spending time outdoors with her dad and the animals and enjoyed riding horses in her jeans and cowboy boots. She attended schools in Trujillo Creek, Aguilar and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1948.
On July 15, 1951, she married Alejandro “Alex” Mestas and mother to three children, Patricia, Alex, and Rita. She was his “Lola” a devoted wife and worked side by side parenting or remodeling their house.
A hard worker she was employed with various insurance companies and worked for Drs. Fabec, Raye, and Jimenez as a bookkeeper. After she formally retired, she continued to work for Council of Governments and the Sheriff’s department part time until she was 80 years old. Actively involved with the Senior Citizens Center, she went on trips to Central City, enjoyed meals with friends and made her tasty tortillas for their fundraisers.
Rose enjoyed Bingo, especially playing quarters (the card game) and socializing with friends. An avid fan she watched the Broncos, Nuggets and Rockies and could talk about the players’ personalities.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, served on the Parish Council and was a Eucharist Minister for several years. Rose was a very involved member of the Catholic Daughters and became the Grand Regent. She was also actively involved in the Sociedad De Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe and served in several roles.
Her family and faith were of utmost importance to her, and she was very involved with the church. Education was extremely important to our mother and she and Dad worked two jobs each to send her children to Trinidad Catholic High School, her alma mater. Mom attended Holy Trinity High School and was adamant that each of her children attend Catholic School.
She was extremely generous, and all were welcomed and fed in her home. Her delicious tortillas and enchiladas were well known to all who knew her. Everyone loved her date nut cookies, wine cookies and empanada.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Patricia Mestas Vigil of Fort Collins, CO; Alex (Jennifer) of Loveland, CO; and Rita Mestas-Tatum (Byron) of Thornton, CO. Grandmother Rose is survived by her grandchildren, Marcus (Stephanie) great grand-children Malaya and Makaeus Vigil of Riverside, CA and Everett (Ame) Vigil of Loveland, CO and Shelbie (John) Engelking of Fort Collins, CO, Owen (Cristina) Mestas, step great grandchildren Aliah and Chase Halvorson of Berthoud, CO and Eric (fiancé Autumn Schempp)Mestas of Loveland, CO.
She is also survived by her sister Loretta (Hugh) Yates of Thornton, CO and numerous family and friends.
Public viewing will be Monday, March 13th for the from 3pm – 6 pm and Tuesday, March 14th from 9am – 11am at the Comi Funeral Home Chapel. Celebration of Life will be Tuesday March 14th with rosary at noon followed by the eulogy and mass at Holy Trinity Church. Internment with Rite of Committal will follow at the Trinidad Catholic Cemetery with graveside services conducted by the Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Mestas are Kirk Hidreth, Dan Mestas, Michael Mestas, Frank Montoya, Mike Brunelli and Sheriff Derek Navarette. Honorary pall bearers are Orlando Mestas Duane Vigil, Ernie Vigil Alfred Trujillo Dan Ruliffson and Dr. Joe Jimenez.

Rose always had a smile on her face and often spoke of “going home to be with the Lord”, so the family asks that in the Celebration of her life that individuals wear bright spring colors at the services to guide her on her journey.
