In loving Memory of Mickey Alvin Baker

MICKEY ALVIN BAKER

Lifelong Raton resident Mickey Alvin Baker, 91, passed away on December 21, 2022, in Larkspur Colorado.

He was born October 6, 1931, to Ben, Jr. and Jennie Baker in the coal camp of Sugarite, New Mexico.

Mickey was preceded. in death by his parents, his brother, Ben III, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Eugene and Josephine Moore, his sister-in-law Shirley Baker, his sister­ in-law Wilma Kersh, and several aunts and uncles.

Mickey was united in marriage to Jo Madlyn Moore on November 29, 1957, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Raton.

Mickey’s early education was acquired in the Sugarite, Van Houten, and Koehler coal camps. After completing the intermediate grades, he rode a school bus from the Koehler coal camp into Raton to attend high school. He was a 1949 graduate of Raton High School and attended Trinidad State Junior College.

During his lifetime Mickey worked for St. Louis, Rocky Mountain, and Pacific Company at the Koehler Mine, as a plumbing contractor, and as an insurance agent for Equitable Life of New York, where he was a life insurance underwriter for 31 years. h1 1958, while he was employed in plumbing construction, Mickey was assigned to work at the building site of the “new” Raton High School.

At the time of his death, Mickey was a member of St. Patrick-St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Raton Golf Association. He was a long-time member of Elks Lodge 865 and was also affiliated with the Kiwanis Club, the Raton Ambassadors, and St. Patrick-St. Joseph Mayordomos.

Mickey was an enthusiastic promoter of Raton, and never missed an opportunity to tout the positive aspects of his hometown and often volunteered to help with town events.

Mickey was instrumental in organizing the Raton Ambassadors and served as chairman of the organization for eight years. His civic-mindedness led him to a successful bid for the Raton City Commission in 1982, and his eight-year stint with the commission included four years as Mayor of Raton.

Mickey was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. His passion was playing golf and he was an active member of the Raton Golf Association for sixty-plus years. He enjoyed working with his hands and possessed the practical skills needed to complete many home projects. Mickey loved interacting with people. He was a “people person” sociable, outgoing, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in others. He enjoyed making people laugh, and was always willing to lend a hand in time of need.

Mickey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jo Madlyn, son Tom (Mary) Baker of Larkspur, Colorado; granddaughters Meagan Marie Baker of Littleton, Colorado, and Tyler Delaney Baker of Parker, Colorado; and his brother Buddy (Vivian) Baker of Raton.

Recitation of the most Holy Rosary for Mickey will be Friday, February 17, 2023, at St. Patrick’s / St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. recited by Frank Cimino followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. with Father Bill Woytavich as the Celebrant. The Rite of Committal and Inurnment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Donations can be made in Mickey’s memory to Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements for Mickey Alvin Baker are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.

    Deepest sympathy to Jo Madlyn and the family of Mickey Baker. Mikey was such a great guy and so supportive when he was on the Raton Housing Authority Board. Mikey truly cared about people and was everyone’s friend. He will be truly missed in Raton.
