The St. Michael’s Horsemen baseball team blew into Raton on Tuesday afternoon looking to remain undefeated in district play and blew up Raton pitching to score an 18 to 7 win and go to 4-0 in District 2AAA.
On a very windy spring afternoon in Northeastern NM, every high fly ball was an adventure as both the wind and the playing surface gave both teams problems. Raton’s defense also committed several throwing errors which cost them and it started in the first inning. With two outs and just one run in, an overthrow to first base opened the flood gates for three more.
Raton responded in the home half of the first, as Matthew Quartieri launched a rocket to the left center field fence, bringing in Dylan Quartieri. That was followed by Adrian Romero’s RBI single which cut the lead in half. Romero would eventually go three for three at the plate including being hit by a pitch thrown by Rahul Williams.
Williams was a workhorse for the Horsemen, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings giving up six hits and striking out six Tigers.
Raton used three arms in the contest, but St. Mikes hit the ball hard all day for 19 hits, one of them a two-out, three run blast off the bat of catcher CeeJay Saiz that cleared the left field fence in a hurry in the sixth inning.
Raton’s next contest will also be at home, as West comes to town on Friday, May 8 for a District doubleheader
