Cheryl “Cherrie” Lynn Duran
08/02/1961 – 02/01/2022
Cheryl “Cherrie” Lynn age 60 was called to Heaven on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, near her home in Segundo, CO as a result of a vehicle accident that also took the life of her mother. Cheryl was born in Trinidad, CO to Mary “Maxine” (Derrera) and Jose “Butter” Duran of Segundo, CO. Cheryl graduated from Trinidad High School in 1981 and she was an all-around handy woman, always willing to help whoever needed a helping hand. Cheryl was well known by everyone and it always amazed her family to see how many people knew her personally. She always stopped to talk to people she knew or even talked to the ones she would just meet. She inherited this trait from her dad.
Cheryl enriched our lives by always wanting to help her family and friends in any way possible. She will forever be missed by the many people she met throughout her life. Her friends at Sam’s (playing darts), the Trinidad Trigger family and fans – she rarely missed a game while they were playing in town, and the many people she met in the jobs she held. Cheryl delivered the Trinidad Chronicle Newspaper around town and up the river as far as Stonewall for many years. She continued delivering the newspaper through the pandemic, being considered an essential employee involved in the delivery of news. Cheryl was also a client of LACRC (Las Animas County Rehab Center) working on various jobs throughout the community.
Cheryl also enjoyed going fishing in the summers teaching her various nephews and nieces how to fish at Trinidad Central Park or Monument Lake. Cheryl along with her mother painted ceramics at the Segundo Senior Center (aka The Kennedy Center). She was skilled in embroidering, crochet, and enjoyed making gifts during Christmas for family and friends.
Cheryl is survived by her siblings; Vicki (Monte) Smith of Arvada; Marie Abu-Okal of Thornton; and Dwayne (Laurie) Duran of Denver. “Aunt Cherry” had numerous nephews and nieces; Aaron Smith; Jenifer Smith; Dewey (Devyna) Duran; Mona (Guillermo) Laing; Maye Lynna (Rueben) Ramirez; Andrew (Monika) Duran; and Ali (Aubrey) Abu-Okal. Also to cherish her memories and the many stories and the skills she tried to pass on are her great-nephews and nieces; Jayden Healey; Max Opperman; Xavier and Rueben Ramirez; Isaiah Lovato; Nyellie and Harley Duran; Makilah and Amelia Duran; Mahmoud, Zakaria “Zak” and Ameera Abu-Okal; and Giuliana “Gigi” Laing. Future nephew, Andrew Duran, Jr. to be born in June. As well as aunts and uncles on both sides of her extended family.
