The Raton Tigers hosted the St. Mikes Horsemen Friday January 21, for their first district game of the season after the West Las Vegas game was postponed earlier in the week.
The JV boys took to the floor and held their own till the second quarter where the Horsemen took over the game and outscored the Tigers 18-10 going into halftime with a 29-18 lead. Second half action saw the Horsemen dominate and especially in the fourth quarter where St Mikes dropped in 27 points to finish the game with a 74-35 win.
The Raton varsity boys with only nine players on the court faired much better taking the early lead and after a tie at five pulled out to end the first quarter up by seven. Raton managed to keep the lead throughout the game and at one point taking a 13 point lead. Raton went into halftime with only a 27-19. Not what most would consider a comfortable lead especially with the likes of St. Mikes.
As the teams took the court in the third period St. Mikes took the ball to the basket with a seven point scoring streak. As the game continued the Horseman battled to within two late in the fourth quarter. Raton however managed to make a scoring run of their own and expanded the lead back out to eight. St. Mikes went into a fouling game in order to tighten the score back up but that strategy failed as Raton scored enough at the line to finally create a 10 point lead and end the game with a 45-35 score.
