In Loving Memory of Alexander A. Cortez

Alexander A. Cortez, 73 passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.  He was born April 4, 1947, in Raton, NM to Frank and Antonia Cortez.  Alex was the third of 5 children.

In his senior year at Raton High School, he was the State Champion in the 880-yard run. He graduated from Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Physical Education and a minor in General Science and Biology. In 1988 he attended the State of NM Police Academy in Santa Fe, NM.

He was employed from 1985 to 1988 as a Motor Transportation Inspector at the Port of Entry in Raton, NM.  After attending the Police Academy, he worked with the Motor Transportation Police Division at the Port of Entry in Raton (1988 to 2000), he continued his employment as a Motor Transportation Inspector until his retirement in 2005.  Shortly thereafter he was rehired as a Motor Transportation Inspector also at the Port of Entry in Raton until the time of his death.

In 2018, Alex was awarded The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Inspector of the Year for District 2. He enjoyed the work he did at the Port of Entry and loved running and jogging in his spare time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Antonia Cortez, his brother Charles Cortez, and his sister Mary Lou Montoya.    

Survivors include his two brothers, Frank Cortez Jr. (Laura) of Pueblo West, CO, and David (Alma) of Las Cruces, NM, other survivors include his nieces and nephews, along with great nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. with the Funeral Mass celebrated immediately thereafter. The Rite of Committal and Inurnment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
