On Saturday January 23, John Southern, loving brother and uncle passed away from complications of an auto accident, he was 73. John was born on May 31, 1947 to Charles and Gladys in Boston Massachusetts. John was the eldest of seven children. He is survived by 3 aunts, Elizabeth, Celia and Edith, 2 siblings, Bart and Charlotte, and brother in law Mark and sister in law Debbie, and 10 nieces and nephews, and many cousins. The family moved to California in 1960. He moved to New Mexico to finish his graduate work and care for his grandmother. John taught 4th grade in Raton for 32 years. He enjoyed teaching very much. He was an avid reader, he enjoyed mysteries, novels and reading the newspaper. He was an excellent baker and cook. He enjoyed coming back to California and visiting family and going fruit picking in the orchards. He enjoyed trips to the Parks and the beach and a good picnic. He enjoyed visiting our 93 year old Aunt Bess and family in Roswell NM. John had long friendships with his buddies from school, Josephine Biundo and her family, and Mae Regusa and Paul Malano. He was known as a kind person and will be missed. His ashes will be spread at his favorite beach in Monterey California.

Was a student for Mr. Southern’s first year of teaching 4th grade at Kearny. I still have fond memories of of him and Mrs Biundo even though he may have swatted me a few times that I definitely deserved.
