7 Guiding Principles for Families Supporting Remote Learning
It’s important to understand how best to support your children in their home learning. Here are seven key ideas that lead to success (based on research). While the article was written in April in response to the initial school closure, the ideas are as important this fall. Here are some of the key ideas for successful learning.
ESTABLISH A ‘FLEXIBLE LEARNING’ SPACE – The space your child is learning in should feel like school in some way.
CHECK-IN EVERY MORNING—AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY – Your child should participate in each live learning time throughout the day. Teachers are recording their class meetings for students to watch later if needed.
ALLOW FREQUENT ‘BRAIN BREAKS’ – A ‘brain break’ involves students getting off-screen time and moving their bodies. We recommend getting outside if possible.
FIND A RHYTHM THAT WORKS – Teachers are working to help create this rhythm for your child. If things are not working, please reach out directly to your child’s teacher(s).
ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE – This idea means that not everything will be easy and it’s not up to you to make it that way for your child. Struggling and overcoming challenges builds resilience.
CONSIDER PASSIONS AND PLAY – When your child is done with their schoolwork, encourage learning in areas of interest.
