This fishing report, provided by Dustin Berg and Go Unlimited (supporting disabled anglers) and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Abiquiu Lake: John Hutson of Carson caught a 26-inch, 6-pound 4-ounce walleye using a blue creature bait on July 31.
Bluewater Lake: Andrea Hunnicutt of Albuquerque caught a 42-inch, 18-pound tiger muskie using a top water lure on August 4.Greg Thomas of Las Vegas, Nevada, caught a 35-inch tiger muskie using a shallow diving top water lure on July 26. Itxchel De La Rosa of Albuquerque caught a 40-inch, 19.2-pound tiger muskie using a 4.5-inch Kitech swimbait on August 4. Ryan Slater of Albuquerque caught a 31-inch, 16-pound tiger muskie using a crankbait on July 31.
Chama River: Marcus Sandoval, age 12, of Albuquerque caught a 21-inch 3-pound brown trout using a silver Panther Martin on July 25. Michael Martinez, age-12, of Albuquerque caught a 17-inch rainbow trout using a salamander pattern lure on July 28. Michael Steplowski, age 8, of Albuquerque caught his first five trout ever, including a 13-inch brown trout, using a black and gold Panther Martin spinner on July 31. Mason Garcia, age 6, of Santa Fe caught a 20.5-inch rainbow trout using a white PowerBait worm on August 3.
Chaparral Park Lake: Sylas Layton, age 13, of Lovington caught a 2-pound largemouth bass using a beetle spin on his birthday August 1.
Eagle Nest Lake: Steve Leslie of Albuquerque caught a 22-inch rainbow trout using Nymph Grape PowerBait on July 30.
Elephant Butte Lake: Mike Franka of El Paso caught and released a 25-pound blue catfish using cut shad on a Kentucky rig with an 8/0 circle hook on July 28.
Hopewell Lake: Andrew Romero of Albuquerque caught a 19-inch, 3.5-pound rainbow trout using a size 18 white dry fly on August 1.
Lake Van: Jade Aragones, age 11, of Dexter caught an 8-pound catfish using hotdogs on July 31.
Latir Lakes: Thomas DeVargas, age 11, of La Mesilla caught a 17-inch wild rainbow trout using an elk hair caddis fly on August 3. This was his first fish caught with a fly rod.
Maxwell Lake 13: Andrew Gomez, age 9, of Hobbs caught a 23-inch, 2-pound rainbow trout using worms on July 29.
Mesilla Dam: William Schroeder of Las Cruces caught a 7-pound channel catfish using red worms on July 30.
Pecos River, South: Kacy Lewis of Carlsbad caught a 16-inch white bass using a spinner on July 30.
Tingley Beach: Aria Garcia, age 6, of Albuquerque caught an 18-inch catfish using chicken liver on July 30.
Young Pond: Kenneth Jay Cox III of Las Cruces caught a 26-inch, 7-pound catfish using chicken liver on August 2.

Northeast Fishing Report
Cabresto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday morning was 33.9 cfs. Fishing was good using nymphs and dry flies.
Clayton Lake: Fishing for trout was fair using marshmallow PowerBait. Fishing for catfish was fair using chicken liver. The boat ramp is closed due to low water levels.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using tubes and creature baits for largemouth bass on the north end of the lake. Fishing was good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The lake level is currently dropping and boaters are advised to watch for rocks.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla on Monday was 73.8 cfs. Fishing is fair using yellow sallies, hoppers, stimulators and small bead head mayfly nymphs.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good for trout using PowerBait fished 4-feet from the lake bottom. Fishing was good for perch using worms. A few pike were caught by anglers using streamer flies and trolling spinners. There is moss build up on the lake and the best fishing reports came from areas clear of moss. We had no reports on other species.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, spinners, worms and PowerBait for trout.
Fawn Lakes: The last report was that high runoff water has created poor fishing conditions.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: Fishing was good for trout using PowerBait and fly patterns such as wooly buggers and Pistol Petes.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, spoons, spinners and PowerBait for trout.
Latir Lake: An angler reported catching a 17-inch rainbow trout last Saturday using an elk hair caddis.
Los Pinos River: Fishing for trout was good using woolly buggers and Parachute Adams flies.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing for trout was fair to good using flies.
Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.
Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 89.9 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, leach pattern flies and Panther Martin spinners.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 97.0 cfs. Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Panther Martin spinners, Golden Hare’s Ear Nymphs and a few trout were also caught using dry flies.
Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge was 1,180 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Fishing near Albuquerque was fair to good using hotdogs, chicken liver and worms for catfish. Anglers are advised to bring bug spray.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Valdez was 42.1 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using small spinners and salmon eggs.
Rio Mora: Stream flow on Monday morning was 35.5 cfs. Fishing the upper river for trout was fair to good using worms.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Penasco was 27.8 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair using bead head nymphs, hoppers and worms.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Shuree Ponds: We hand no reports from anglers this week. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-December 31.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing for bass was good using Whopper Ploppers, soft plastic stick baits and jerk shad. Anglers reported catching a 6-pound smallmouth bass last Saturday. Fishing for walleye and crappie was slow. Fishing for white bass was good trolling Model A Bombers and Flicker Shad. Vertical jigging with jigging spoons and blade baits was also working well for white bass. Fishing for catfish was good using nightcrawlers and chicken liver. Fishing for bluegill was good using nightcrawlers. The surface temperature is 80 degrees and the main lake is clear.
Northwest Fishing Report
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing for walleye and smallmouth bass was fair to good using curly tail grubs, crankbaits and drop shot rigged wacky with senko worms. Anglers reported having success using black, blue and chartreuse colors near rocky underwater slopes. Fishing for catfish was good using worms at night and early in the morning. Due to low water levels anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 963 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for bass was good using micro crankbaits, senko worms and jitter bug crank baits.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing for tiger muskie was very good using segmented crank baits, top water lures, flies and jerk baits. Fishing for catfish was fair using stink bait and hotdogs. We had no reports on other species.
Brazos River: Fishing was good using worms and salmon eggs for trout.
Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using worms, spinners, Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 130 cfs and 147 cfs respectively. Fishing for trout below El Vado was good using Panther Martin spinners, nightcrawlers, nymph flies, egg pattern flies and PowerBait worms. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow to fair for bass using nightcrawlers. Fishing was slow to fair for catfish using chicken liver, homemade dough bait, worms, cut bait and stink bait.
El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow for trout.
Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The best bank fishing was reported to be on the lake’s western edge using worms and PowerBait for trout.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near the town of Jemez on Monday morning was 34.2 cfs. Fishing on the upper Rio San Antonio in the Valles Caldera National Preserve was good using dry flies such as hoppers and beetles. Using stealth to approach feeding fish is a key to success. At higher elevations the biting horse flies are very bad and anglers are recommended to have deet bug spray and long sleeves/pant legs. Fishing for trout on the Rio Cebolla below Fenton Lake was fair to good using worms.
Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lagunitas Lakes: Fishing for trout was slow.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: Fishing for trout and bass was slow.
McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good for bass using watermelon red flake tubes and chartreuse crankbaits. Fishing for pike was slow. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms and small flies. Fishing for koaknee salmon was good using green, pink and orange spinners tipped with corn fished 35- to 50- feet deep. Anglers reported having success fishing for koaknee salmon using Double Whammies, Kokanee Killers and other assorted spinners. We had no reports on other species.
San Gregorio Lake: Fishing for trout was good using PowerBait and Pistol Petes.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 1,030 cfs. Fishing for trout in the quality water was good using red and crème midge larva fly patterns, dark color zebra midges and crystal flash size 24 and 26. Further downstream, trout fishing is good using baetis patterns such as root beers and RS2s. Anglers reported that some trout are rising and that dry fly fishing is fair.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, a wide assortment of small flies, leach patterns and woolly buggers for trout. Anglers reported large clumps of moss growing in the pond.
Tingley Beach: Fishing for catfish in the bait ponds was good using shrimp, homemade dough bait, chicken liver and raw chicken.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest Fishing Report
Alumni Pond: Fishing for catfish was good using worms.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing for catfish was good at night using worms and homemade dough baits. Fishing for crappie was fair to good. We had no reports on other species.
Bill Evans Lake: Fishing for all species was slow.
Caballo Lake: Fishing for white bass was very good using minnows, crankbaits and nightcrawlers. Fishing for walleye was slow with only a few fish being caught by anglers using minnows. Fishing for catfish was good using minnows and cut bait.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing for white bass was good using live minnows, white tubes and sassy shad. Fishing was fair to good for largemouth and smallmouth bass using dark grey tubes with pepper flake and dropshot rigs with watermelon and red finesse worms. Anglers fishing for bass reported the changing water level was making the bass fishing tricky. Fishing for walleye and crappie was slow. Fishing for catfish was good using cut carp, worms, minnows, homemade dough bait, hotdogs and chicken liver.
Escondida Lake: Anglers report fishing was slow.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 46.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Roberts: Fishing the far northwest area of the lake was fair to good for trout, bass and catfish. Anglers reported having their best success using grey colored dry flies and yellow and grey streamer flies. Fishing for catfish was fair to good using beef liver.
Percha Dam: Fishing for all species was slow.
Quemado Lake: Fishing for trout was good using mosquito pattern flies, silver Panther Martins and PowerBait.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,140 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was fair using curly tail grubs, sassy shad worms and minnows for walleye and white bass. Fishing was good using worms and homemade dough baits for catfish.
Snow Lake: Fishing for trout was slow.
Young Pond: Fishing for catfish was poor to slow using minnows.
Southeast Fishing Report
Alto Lake: Fishing was fair to good for catfish using worms and hotdogs.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Berrendo Creek: Fishing was slow for bass. Fishing was good for carp and blue gill using worms and dough bait.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday morning was 87.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until the spring of 2020.
