This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Alumni Pond: Issiah Astorga caught a 27-inch, 9-pound carp Apr. 14. He was using pack bait with corn.
Navajo Lake: Jeff Stuhlmann of Placitas caught a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass Apr. 8. He was using a jerk bait. Pam Hauer of Albuquerque caught and released a 24.5-inch, 6-pound rainbow trout April 9. She was using a rainbow-colored spoon.
Elephant Butte Lake: Josh Austin of Las Cruces caught and released an 8.69-pound largemouth bass Apr. 13. He was using a creature bait.
Pecos River: JD Coats of Grants caught a 20-inch rainbow trout Apr. 11 and a 25-inch rainbow Apr. 15. He caught the first one fishing the river near Terrero and the second near Cowles. He was using worms. Adam Luke Jimenez, age 9, of Rio Rancho caught a limit of trout Apr. 5. He was fishing the river above the town of Pecos and using Fire Balls.
Tiger Park Pond: Tateum Boswell, age 7, of Bloomfield caught and released a 13-inch trout Apr. 7. He was using worms.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday morning was 17.2 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using Fire Balls, bead head hare’s ears, San Juan worms and red zebra midges for trout.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. The boat ramp is closed due to low water conditions.
Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Costilla Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, swim baits and PowerBait for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gallinas River: Fishing was fair to good using worms and wooly buggers for trout.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: Fishing was good using salmon peach and garlic scented PowerBait for trout.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout up to 14 inches.
Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good PowerBait, worms, bead head hare’s ears and Pistol Petes for trout.
Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam. Work is scheduled to be completed in June, but no firm opening date has been set.
Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 149 cfs. Fishing was fair using worms, prince nymphs, egg patterns and San Juan worms for trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 52.9 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs, poundmeisters, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using PowerBait.
Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge was 474 cfs. Trout fishing above the John Dunn bridge area was fair using caddis dries and nymphs and bead head soft hackles for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday morning was 21.8 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using small red copper John Barrs for trout.
Rio Mora: Stream flow on Monday morning was 37.6 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms, Fire Balls, egg patterns and copper John Barrs for trout.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Penasco was 47.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was good using PowerBait, bead head hare’s ears, Fisher Chick spinners, Panther Martin spinners, Kastmasters and Pistol Petes for trout.
Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was good using jerk baits, swim baits, jig and minnow combinations and worms for walleye. Jarod Rael of Tucumcari caught four 18-inch walleye while fishing from the bank. He was using minnows and worms. We had no reports on other species.
Northwest Fishing Report
Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The lake level continues to drop and launching boats has become very difficult.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 763 cfs. Fishing was fair using
Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bluewater Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 373 cfs and 1,010 cfs respectively. Trout fishing was slow.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait and liver for catfish. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using jigs, creature baits, swim baits and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.
El VadoLake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Fenton Lake: Trout fishing over the past weekend was very good for anglers using Fire Balls, green PowerBait and Mike’s green trout bait. Anglers also did well using olive wooly buggers, Kastmasters and Pistol Petes.
Heron Lake: Fishing from the bank was good using roe sacs, Fire Balls, corn and PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.
Jackson Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms and spoons for trout.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez on Monday morning was 201 cfs and fishing was slow. Trout fishing on the Cebolla was good for anglers using worms, San Juan worms, copper John Barrs and Fire Balls. We had no other stream reports.
Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.
Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and spinners for trout.
Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, spinner baits, grubs, tubes, jigs and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. A few northern pike were caught by anglers using swim baits and jerk baits. Fishing for trout was fair to good for anglers using worms, PowerBait, spoons and crank baits. Matt Hanifin, Ryan Hanifin and Pam Hauer of Albuquerque caught and released several big trout over a two-day period last week. They were using spoons and trolling Rapala shad rap #7s.
San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Juan River: There was a bit of fluctuation in the stream flow this past week as tests were conducted at the main outlet works, but flow on Monday morning was back at 338 cfs. The water remains murky, but fishing picked up some as a few trout were caught by anglers using red annelids, San Juan worms, bright egg patterns and worms.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, leech patterns and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Trout fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, Pistol Petes and Velveeta cheese and spinners. We had no reports on other species.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest Fishing Report
Alumni Pond: Our only report was of a carp caught by an angler using pack bait with corn.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was good using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was good using liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using minnows, small plastics, spoons and crank baits for a mix of white bass, crappie and walleye. A few largemouth bass were caught by anglers using creature baits, jigs and crank baits.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was very good using minnows and jigs for crappie. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass picked up a bit from the previous week. Successful anglers were using jerk baits, tubes, jigs, swim baits, creature baits, crank baits and spinner baits. Fishing was good using crank baits and minnows for white bass walleye. Fishing was good using liver, homemade dough bait, night crawlers and cut bait for catfish. The surface temp was in the high 50s.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes and bead head nymphs for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 260 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, wooly buggers and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait and worms for trout.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. Fishing on the river above Elephant Butte was good using liver and cut bait for catfish.
Snow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.
