James Marvin Heuschkel, age 77 of Raton, passed away Friday March 22. 2019 in Raton. He was born March 1, 1942 in Glenwood Springs, CO, the second of five children. He grew up on the family ranch near Carbondale, CO. In 1966 Jim was drafted and served four years in the United States Navy, serving much of that time on Kodiak Island, AK. Jim taught for a year at Truth or Consequences, NM , then earned his master’s degree. He taught two years in Gallup, NM, before coming to Raton and teaching high school biology. For the 1991-1992 school year he taught in Quezon City in the Philippines after being accepted into the Ful Bright Teacher Exchange Program. Jim enjoyed traveling, backpacking, scuba diving, fishing, photography, identifying plants, beekeeping and doing his own construction work. He was a member of Gate City Lodge No. 11 in Raton.
Jim is survived by his sister: Joyce Heuschkel, Glenwood Springs, CO. Brothers: Lloyd (Bobbie) Heuschkel, San Jose, CA: Robert (Maria) Heuschkel, Glenwood Springs, CO. Brother in-law: Morris Evens, Denver, CO, along with several nieces and nephews. And best friend of many years Marry Ann Andera of Raton.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents: Austin and Doris (Gates) Heuschkel. Sister: Sandra (Morris) Evans.
Memorial services will be Saturday April 20, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Monty McGowen officiating.
