This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Alumni Pond: Daniel Rico of Anthony caught a 26-inch, 11-pound catfish July 8. He was using worms.
Bluewater Lake: JP Schreiner of Albuquerque caught and released a 40-inch, 18-pound tiger muskie July 4. It was his first trip to Bluewater and he was using a silver and dark blue Rapala husky jerk.
Brantley Lake: Evelyn Salcido of Carlsbad caught a 21-inch, 6-pound largemouth bass July 7. She was using a red spinner.
Charette Lakes: Dylann Zalma-Woffard, age 2, of Santa Fe, caught her first fish, a 20-inch rainbow trout July 4. She was using PowerBait. Andreas Ortiz, age 10, of Las Vegas, New Mexico, caught an 18-inch rainbow trout July 7. It was his biggest trout to date and he was using night crawlers.
Cochiti Lake: Ethan Cardenas, age 11, of Rio Rancho, caught a 10.25-inch white bass July 5. He was fishing from the shore by the dam and using a silver Panther Martin. Dan Hendricks of Edgewood caught and released a 30-inch northern pike July 4. He was using a Rapala jointed minnow.
Conchas Lake: Cousins Roddy Helmstetler, age 11 and Abel Desantis, age 11, caught a mixed bag of walleye and catfish July 7 and 8. The big walleye was 20 inches and the big catfish was 26 inches. They were using minnows and cut bait.
Lake Maloya: Manuel Gonzales of Springer caught a 20.5-inch, 3.5-pound rainbow trout July 4. He was using a Pistol Pete.
Navajo Lake: Cayden Mcquitty, age 9, of Flora Vista, caught an 18.5-inch smallmouth bass July 4. He was using a deep diving crank bait. Art Gonzales of Albuquerque caught a 24-inch brown trout July 7. He was using a spinner.
Ned Houk Ponds: Kash Bonney, age 4, caught a 22-inch catfish July 2. He was using liver.
Rio Grande River: Melanie Guillen of Santa Fe caught a 25-inch northern pike July 7. She was fishing the Pilar area and using a Panther Martin. Daniel Lopez of Lyden, caught a 28-inch northern pike July 8. He was fishing the Pilar area and using a Rapala.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Grace Mae Evans, age 9, of Seattle, WA, caught a 17-inch rainbow trout July 9. She was using salmon eggs wrapped in Fire Bait.
Storrie Lake: Tobias Lucero of Las Vegas New Mexico, caught a 16-pound catfish July 7. He was using dough bait.
Sumner Lake: Austin Hill, age 1 and 1/2 of Los Lunas, caught his very first fish, a bluegill, July 4. He was using a night crawler under a bobber. Serenity Hill, age 4, of Los Lunas, caught her very first fish, a catfish, July 4. She was using a Berkley chartreuse worm. Lilly Hill, age 6, of Los Lunas, caught four bluegill July 4. She was using night crawlers.

Abiquiu Lake: Tristan Gallegos, age 8, of Ojo Caliente, caught a smallmouth bass July 1. He was using a jig with a plastic worm. Ayden Gallegos, age 7, of Ojo Caliente, caught a smallmouth bass July 1. He was using a plastic worm.
Bluewater Lake: Alyson Trina Archuleta, age 8, of Penasco, caught and released a 28-inch, 25-pound, catfish. She was using hot dogs. Ryan Bellflower of Deming caught and released a 35-inch tiger muskie June 30. He was using a Rapala drop shot jerk bait. Missy Milam of Los Lunas caught and released a 38-inch tiger muskie June 30. She was using a water dog. Daniel Garcia, age 10, of Los Lunas, caught and released a 45-inch, a 37-inch and a 38-inch tiger muskie June 30. He was using water dogs. Wyatt Kelly, age 16, and Kendall Kelly, age 19, caught and released several tiger muskie ranging in size from 30 to 38 inches June 30. They were using water dogs.
Cochiti Lake: Kendal Hatfield of High Rolls caught a 27-inch, 4-pound, northern pike June 28. He was using a brush hog.
Chama River: Stephanie Medina of Taos caught a 21-inch rainbow trout July 1. She was fly fishing and using a stone fly nymph.
Conchas Lake: Lucas Padilla, age 7, of Bernalillo, caught a 19-in walleye June 29. He was using a Rapala.
San Juan River: Damone Aguirre, age 15, of Farmington, caught a 21-inch rainbow trout July 1. He was using worms.

Northeast Fishing Report
Cabresto Lake: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Charette Lakes: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, night crawlers, Fire Balls, marshmallows and worms for rainbow trout.
Cimarron River: The river through Cimarron Canyon and the Gravel Pit Lakes remain closed until further notice.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms and liver for small catfish. Fishing for trout was slow with just a few caught by anglers using worms and PowerBait. We had no reports on other species.
Conchas Lake: Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using tubes, finesse worms, minnows, senkos, sweet beavers and swim baits. Fishing was fair to good using minnows, crank baits, spoons, leeches and curly tail grubs for walleye and white bass. Fishing was good using worms and small grubs for bluegill. Fishing was good using shrimp, minnows, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Costilla Creek: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Cowles Ponds: Reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
Coyote Creek: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, bead-head hares ears and Fire Balls for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms, Platte River specials, Arnies and Panther Martins for rainbow trout. Vinny Martinez of Santa Fe reported fishing as very good on July 4. He and sons, Elijah and Zachary, caught limits of perch and trout. They were using worms and PowerBait. Fishing was slow to fair using spinner baits, Rapalas and streamers for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using marshmallows, PowerBait, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, Kastmasters, bead-head hares ears, elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs and bead-head pheasant tail nymphs for trout. The best action has been in the early morning and evening hours.
Los Pinos River: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Monastery Lake: Reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
Morphy Lake: Work has begun on the dam and the lake will remain closed through the end of the year.
Pecos River: The river and its tributaries reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 54.4 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using San Juan worms, night crawlers, small spoons, worms, Fire Balls and PowerBait. Currently, the northeast bank of the river from the hatchery to the confluence of the Rio Grande and the portion of the river in the town of Red River remain open to fishing.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 183 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using elk hair caddis, bead-head hares ears, copper John Barrs, San Juan worms, Panther Martins and night crawlers for trout. The best dry fly action has been in the evening hours. Fishing through the Albuquerque area was fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. The portion of the river on the Carson National Forest reopened to fishing July 10.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Valdez was 7.98 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Mora: Reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday morning was 10.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Peter Romero of Pojoaque reported that boats can no longer be launched safely due to extremely low water conditions and that fishing was very slow.
Shuree Ponds: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and marshmallows for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing for walleye was rated as slow. A few were caught by anglers using bottom bouncer rigs and crank baits. Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, finesse worms, creature baits and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill. Night fishing was very good using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. The surface water temp on the main lake was in the high 70s.
Northwest Fishing Report
Abiquiu Lake: HOT SPOT FOR CRAPPIE: Fishing was excellent using micro tubes, small crank baits and small white and chartreuse curly tail grubs for crappie. Fishing was very good using chartreuse curly tail grubs or night crawlers on ¼ – ounce jig heads for walleye. Fishing was fair using senkos, jerk baits, spinner baits, curly tail grubs and swim baits for smallmouth bass. The surface temp was in the mid 70s.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 79.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Michael Griego II reported good fishing on the Peralta Drain catching small largemouth bass, sunfish and bluegill. He was using small crank baits and night crawlers. We had no other reports.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, water dogs, large streamers and swim baits for tiger muskie. Fishing for catfish was slow to fair using hot dogs, water dogs and night crawlers. We had no other reports. The Las Tusas Recreation Area on the south side of the lake has been closed due to extreme fire danger.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice. The area may reopen later this year.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 827 cfs and 698 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair using PowerBait, spoons and night crawlers for rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, hot dogs, spinners and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using minnows, worms, plastics, crank baits and spinners for a mixed bag of crappie, perch, white bass and northern pike. Fishing was slow to fair using jigs, sweet beavers, senkos and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no other reports.
El VadoLake: Fishing near the dam was good using worms, PowerBait, spinners, tubes and grubs for rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. A few bass were also caught by anglers using top water lures.
Fenton Lake: Fenton Lake State Park is tentatively scheduled to open on Wednesday, Jun 11. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Heron Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, Arnies, Panther Martins, Z Rays and worms for rainbow trout and kokanee. We had no reports on other species.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: The streams within the Santa Fe National Forest boundaries reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
Laguna del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and Pistol Petes for trout.
Lagunitas Lakes: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using curly tail grubs, tubes, senkos, spinner baits, crank baits, swim baits and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good using worms, curly tail grubs and crank baits for perch. Fishing for kokanee continued to be a bit sporadic but anglers did manage to catch a few at 40 to 50 feet. They were trolling Arnies and Panther Martins behind sling blades. Fishing was slow to fair using spinners, crank baits and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.
San Gregorio Lake: Reopened to fishing July 9. We had no reports from anglers.
San Juan River: The stream flow below Navajo Lake was raised to 1020 cfs Monday afternoon. Hatches were sporadic this past week and nymphing was a better way to go for the fly fishermen. Fishing through the Quality Waters was fair to good using red annelids, cream larva, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, mini Macs and RS2s. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using Pistol Petes, copper John Barrs, chamois leeches, Panther Martins, jerk baits, worms and Fire Balls.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Reopened to fishing July 9. Fishing was good using Fire Bait, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing in the Central and Youth ponds was slow to fair using shrimp, liver, hot dogs and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: Reopened to fishing July 10. We had no reports from anglers.
Southwest Fishing Report
Alumni Pond: Fishing was fair using hot dogs and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver, shrimp and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using sassy shad, minnows, curly tail grubs, tubes and crank baits for white bass. A few catfish were caught by anglers using cut bait. We had no other reports.
Elephant Butte Lake: HOT SPOT FOR WALLEYE: Several anglers reported catching limits of walleye this past week. They were using curly tail grubs, Flicker Shad, Walley Divers, Mepps spinners, sassy shad and spoons. White bass fishing was good using shiners, shad, curly tail grubs, sassy shad, top water lures and spoons. Fishing was good using senkos, tubes, top water lures, creature baits, worms and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using sassy shad, spoons, crank baits, jerk baits and curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms. Fishing was very good using cut bait, shrimp, minnows, homemade dough bait, beef liver and chicken liver for catfish.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, homemade dough bait and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 23.5 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow for all species.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Rancho Grande Ponds: Fishing was good using hot dogs, worms and liver for catfish.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,180 cfs. Fishing was good using liver, shiners, cut bait, night crawlers and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast Fishing Report
Alto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bataan Lake: Fishing was fair using liver, hot dogs and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no other reports.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday morning was 36.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. The lake is scheduled to reopen in August 2018.
Bosque Redondo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, spinner baits, senkos, tubes and swim baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow on Monday morning at Hollywood was 6.24 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
