Shirley Ann (Bivens) Owens passed away peacefully on February 7, 2017 at the Trinidad Inn Nursing Home. She was 91.
Shirley was born on March 14, 1925 in Walsenburg, CO to Glen and Lilian Bivens.
Shirley attended various schools in and around the coal camps near Walsenburg, CO, graduating from Walsenburg High School where she met her future husband (Frank) Maynard Owens. Maynard and Shirley were united in marriage on December 28, 1946 and would raise two children together, Glen and Wendy. They eventually moved from Walsenburg to Weston, CO and finally settled in Trinidad upon their retirement from the coal mines.
Shirley loved life and was a friend to all that ever had the privilege of meeting her. She always enjoyed her crocheting, enjoyed reading, especially her daily devotion books, and Shirley loved her sports. She enjoyed them all but was especially fond of two. Basketball, never missing a year of the TSJC tournament where she and Maynard could be found in their familiar seats in the corner of Scott gym, where Shirley would happily lend a hand judging the cheerleading or princess competition. Her greatest sports love was baseball, where again they could be found supporting the Trojans of TSJC in Maynard’s old red truck at Central Park, or in front of her TV lamenting the moves made by many of the Rockies players or managers.
By far the greatest love of Shirley’s life was her Lord and Savior Jesus, and her many great grandchildren. Who she could always be heard bragging about one or more to any and all who would listen.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Maynard, her brother Kenneth Bivens, one grandson Brent Owens and one great granddaughter Rachel Owens.
Left to cherish her memory are her two children Glen (Betty) Owens, Canon City, CO and Wendy (Joe) Coberly, Trinidad, CO. 4 grandchildren Ryan Coberly, Trinidad, CO; Chris (Melissa) Owens, Homosassa, FL; Keith(Beth) Coberly, Trinidad, CO; and Misty (Matt) Graham, Port St Lucie, FL. 9 great grandchildren, Derek Owens, Jonlyn McDonald, Mark McDonald, Ryanna Coberly, Eric Coberly, Chloe Owens, Parker Owens, Callie Owens, and the newest addition MacKenzie Graham, also one great great grandson Connor McDonald. Honorary pallbearers are special friends Dan and Loraine Renner. Active pallbearers are Gary Gordon, Bob VanMatre, Glen Owens, Joe Coberly, Ryan Coberly, and Darryl Long.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Shirley’s name to St Jude Children’s Hospital.
Funeral Services will be Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11AM at the Comi Chapel with Pastor Cary Nelson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Trinidad Masonic Cemetery .
