West Las Vegas Topples Raton in Home Opener

Raton baseball hosted the West Las Vegas Dons for their home opener Monday afternoon with a tough game and another mark in the loss column as West scored first and added to that in three more innings.

West sparked it with a four run third inning where it started on an error from a fly ball to right field that started loading the bases. By the time pitcher Jonathan Cabrieles could get a handle on it four runners managed to cross the plate. Raton returned and scored one but that is all they could do leaving two on base.

Coach Mike Marez noted that the team is young with only one senior in Brandon Luksich at the catcher position. The boys did show their youth Monday afternoon with a few inexperience mistakes and hesitations. Marez noted that his team is also using a couple of eighth graders mostly in the courtesy running department for the catcher and pitchers.

The team has a long ways to go and Marez hopes that by district the inexperience will be over shadowed with experience from the number of games coming up.

The team travels again this weekend back to the St Mikes Invitational which begins on Thursday.
