John L. Garcia, 76, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on January 9, 1940, in El Prado, NM. He was raised in Cimarron and Raton. John dedicated 23 years of his life to law enforcement, beginning his career in 1964 with the Colfax County Sheriff’s Department and later joining the Raton Police Department where he retired as Chief of Police in 1987. He loved his work and enjoyed engaging with people, especially those who needed his help. He exhibited the traits of a good police officer, to include Perseverance, Honesty, Integrity and Trustworthiness. Even years after his retirement, people still called him “Chief” out of respect.
John is preceded in death by his parents Jose and Lucia Garcia, brothers Felipe Garcia, Gilbert Garcia and Joe Garcia and sister Mary Espinoza.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Marie Machado Garcia, daughters, Elisha (Joseph) Arguello and Jonnie Marie (Nick) Carroll; and three loving grandchildren, Kyle and Sean Arguello and Nicole Carroll. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen (Adonago) Garcia, Virginia Cortez and Pauline Garcia; sister-in-laws, Lita (Alfred) Sandoval and Jeanette Encinias, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and a multitude of friends.
Visitation will occur on Friday, March 4, from 1-4 pm at Yaksich-Long Funeral Home. Rosary and Mass will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, beginning at 9:30 am. Cremation and inurnment will take place at a later date.
