Andreita “Annie” Dikeman age 94, a lifetime resident of Roy, NM passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2016 in Santa Fe, NM.
Annie Dikeman, youngest child of Pedro and Bersabe Gonzales, was born in Roy, NM March 4, 1921. Her father died when she was nine months old. Her Mother, a widow, and her siblings homesteaded in Mills. She attended school in DeHavan, Saint George Catholic School and Roy High School. After graduating from Roy she attended New Mexico Highlands University. While home on break she took a position with Floershiem Mercantile as a temporary clerk which turned into a full time position. Eventually, being promoted to a buyer for the clothing department where she traveled to shows in Denver and other southwest cities.
Annie loved and lost, had ups and downs in life and in love. Annie was married twice, to two wonderful men. Annie’s first husband Chris Sanchez passed away in an accident only a few short years after their vows, leaving Annie alone with two small children, Rose and Daniel.
Annie was widowed for twelve years after which she met and fell in love with her second husband, Jerry Dikeman and had one daughter, Carla. Together they blended their families. Jerry had four children from a previous marriage, Diana, Britt, Randy and Danny. That wasn’t enough; they took in several foster children throughout the years, the youngest being Jeanette Martinez. They bought and ran a few businesses, Mesa Theater and Mesa Auto Parts and Ramsey Apartments. Jerry passed away after 29 years of marriage, and Annie never again remarried.
Annie worked as the Clerk for the Village of Roy for 31 years. During this time she also had other businesses, she kept the books for the Holy Family Parish for decades until her eyesight faded and she was no longer able to. Annie was a member of the Parish Finance Committee, she was a member of the Harding County Health Council, she was the Chairman of the Annual Catholic Appeal, and the Chairman of The Roy Cemetery Improvement Board. Annie was instrumental in many improvements around the Village of Roy. Annie loved her politics. After retirement she became the Mayor of the Village of Roy.
Annie was a tiny woman, with a fierce spirit. She stood up for what she believed. She will be missed by her family her daughters, her special son-in-law Nino and her grandchildren. We want to thank her for making us strong, independent and loved. She was preceded in death by her parents: Antonio and Bersabe Gonzales; 1st husband: Christobal Sanchez; 2nd husband: Gerald F. Dikeman; sons: Daniel Sanchez; Gerald B. Dikeman; Gary R. Dikeman; sisters: Josephine Gonzales; Carlota Gonzales; Alice Archuleta; Pauline Ulibarri; brothers: Fermin Gonzales; Raymond Gonzales and Eloy Gonzales; infant brother: Fermin Gonzales. She is survived by her daughters: Rose Elkins of Santa Fe, NM; Carla Esquibel and husband Secundino of Rio Rancho, NM; Diana Anderson and husband Richard of Roy, NM; son: Danny Dikeman and wife Patty of Arkansas; foster daughter: Jeanette Martinez of Raton, NM; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Pauline Cremieux of Seattle, WA; brothers-in-law: Richard Dikeman and wife Mary of OK; Bruce Glasgow of Albuquerque, NM; and Emilio Sanchez of Santa Fe, NM; numerous: nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Rosary service will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 10:00am at Holy Family Church in Roy, NM. Funeral services will be conducted following the rosary also at Holy Family Church in Roy, NM with Father C John Brasher as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Roy Cemetery with the following serving as Casket Bearers: Niko Esquibel, Levi Hannon, Kurtis Gonzales, Lester Roy, Kenneth Hanon and Joseph Martinez. Serving as Honorary Bearers will be Lucas, Marcus, Dominic, Damian, Ryan, Tyler, Brandon, Randy and Richard. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to Holy Family Catholic Church Building fund 545 St. George St. Roy, NM 87743.
