Byron Lloyd Pettis, age 57, of Hoehne, Colorado passed away Tuesday afternoon February 9, 2016 on his farm.
Byron was born to Thelma J.(Flaiz) and Eldon L. Pettis on October 21, 1958 in Montrose, Colorado. He grew up in La Junta and Brush, Colorado before moving back to Olathe to finish his formal education. Byron was a hunting guide, tinner and sheet metal worker most of his life, but his real passion was rodeo. He was a professional bull rider and rode bareback horses. During Byron’s rodeo career he saw a multitude of successes, including winning the Mountain State Circuit Finals and the Elizabeth Stampede. He also qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in 1986 but was unable to compete due to a broken leg.
He was a simple man of quick wit and possessed a kindness of heart that was evident in his actions. Byron had a soft spot for all animals but especially his horses and dogs. Always one to laugh, Byron passed to his family a sense of humor and relentless work ethic. Throughout his rodeo travels, he amassed countless friends and stories that reflected the amazing life he led. Byron will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Byron is survived by his wife Mary (Mincic) whom he dated in high school and reunited with later in life to marry May 17, 2006, children Ryan (Dustin) Cannon, Tyrel (Andy) Mincic-Barry, and Wyatt Mincic, Sister Laura (Jerry) Smith, brothers-in-law Skeeter (Grace) Mincic and Wayne Mincic, mother-in-law Mary Ann Mincic, grandchildren Elaine and Conner Cannon, nieces Jessie (Jake) Altman, Mariah (Ricardo) Chacon, nephews Cole Smith and Clayton Mincic, great niece Sloan Altman and great nephew Jackson Chacon, as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents Thelma and Eldon Pettis.
