45th Annual Student Art Show

45 years ago Raton High art teacher Marv Newton began a student art show that has continued to today. Kathy Vertovec took over the program 19 years ago from Newton and will now hand over the torch to another art teacher.

Vertovec told the crowd it is time to speak up and let the school board know that this program is important to these kids. She went on to mention that when the kids are testing they tend to take on a testing face. She added but when they finish one of these art pieces there are smiles on their faces. Vertovec told the crowd that she will take retirement this year and hopes to see the program continue. 

The students’ art work lined the walls as did several ribbons for their outstanding work. One young artist however stood out, July Hunnicutt, who not only won several awards was awarded Best of Show for a still life “Still Life with Pears”. Hunnicutt said she was ,”Happy.” to learn that she had won the best of show for the Youth in Art 2015 show. Several young artist took home awards and several even won cash awards for their efforts. 45th Annual Student Art ShowWinners.
