The storms rolled in Tuesday afternoon and as usual the lightning began to pop and one strike sparked a fire on US 64 at about mile marker 337 that Raton Fire Chief Anthony Burk named the Airport Fire.
Units were called out at about 4:34 p.m. and found a grass fire near the road that expanded onto the airport property promoting a temporary flight restriction and also closed US 64 for a short period of time. Once the smoke died down and the fire danger diminished US 64 was reopened and the TFR at the airport was lifted.
The fire was estimated at about five acres when the rain came and dowsed the flames. The fire was considered to be contained and will be checked again tomorrow to verify that it is indeed out.
Fire fighters were released from the scene at about 5:30 p.m.
