Ruby Cortez, age 92, of Miami, left this world peacefully in Raton, on the morning of August 6, 2026. Ruby was born at Los Pinos, west of Colmor, New Mexico on January 11, 1934.
Ruby will be remembered for her ceramics and handmade quilts. Every child, grandchild, great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews and siblings received these cherished quilts. She enjoyed family get togethers, spending time with her sisters and brother.
Ruby was primarily raised in Miami, where she attended school until the family moved to Sunnyside on the UU Bar ranch near Rayado. While in Miami, she met the love of her life, Lee Cortez. They were married in January 1953. They lived on several ranches in mostly Colfax County. In the mid 80’s they purchased a small ranch in her beloved Miami, and they happily returned to where it all began.
Preceding her in death is her husband, Lee Cortez, her parents, Jose & Salome Sandoval, brothers Ray & Curly Sandoval and sister Dolores Griego. Also, her great-granddaughter Mikayla Duran
Ruby is survived by her daughter, Josephine (Arthur) Duran of Miami, son, John (Evelyn) of Peralta, NM. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nicole (Randy) Saunders of Bloomington, IN, Mandy (Stacy) Thompson, of Portland, OR, Jason (Christine) Cortez of Midland, TX, Levi Cortez of Bosque Farms, NM. Great grandchildren, Isiah Duran, Tameta Thompson, Nick Thompson, LaTasha Banks, Emmie Cortez, Trace Cortez, Jonathon Cortez and Justus Cortez. Also surviving are her sisters Frances Griego, Mary Martinez, Isabel Lloyd, Martha Rachel and Louise Johnson and brother Chris Sandoval. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary for Ruby will be at Immaculate Conception Church in Cimarron on Saturday, August 22 at 10:00 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. A luncheon will follow at Sister Hildegard Parish Hall in Cimarron. Inurnment will take place in Miami following the luncheon.
