Mary Luisa Mitchell
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Luisa Mitchell (92), born August 13, 1934, beloved mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and friend. She was surrounded by family when she peacefully went to be with Our Lord on September 19, 2026.
Born in Raton to Amalia Candelario and Pedro Lopez, Mary remained a lifelong resident of Raton. She lived a full life centered on family, faith, and service. In 1958, she married Charles P. Mitchell, and together they welcomed three children: Charles (Chas), Judith (Lynda), and Cynthia. Mary was a devoted homemaker, always attending to her family’s needs and supporting her children’s activities throughout their school years.
Mary was a lifelong member of St. Patrick‑St. Joseph Catholic Church. She attended St. Patrick’s Academy before continuing her education at Raton High School. She taught First Communion catechism alongside Margaret Candelario and Virginia Cortez, sang in the church choir, and was an active member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Legion of Mary. For 20 years, she served with dedication in the Foster Grandparent Program, where many lovingly knew her as “Grandma Mary.” She was well known for the Hollyhocks and Cosmos which she admired and looked forward to blooming every spring and summer.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Amalia Candelario and Pedro Lopez; her brothers Frank Maestas and Salvador Candelario; her sisters Esperanza Candelario, Lenore Lopez, and Martha Garcia; her granddaughter Kimberly Ann Mitchell; and her son Charles “Chas” Mitchell.
She is survived by her daughters Lynda Caylor and Cynthia (Charles) Bone; grandchildren Michael R. Goodloe (Jennifer), Christina Mitchell (Antwoine), Ashlee (Josh) Wright, Charles A. Mitchell Jr., Amber (Nathanial) Cole, and Martin (Alexis) Bone; and great‑grandchildren Ryan Goodloe, Jauzlyn Bone, Gage Bone, Ivan Bone, Xzavier Bone, Charlie Mitchell, Maxwell Taylor, Alyssa Taylor, and Dominic Taylor. Also survived by Numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Special friends Edna Sandoval and Judy Ortiz. Also, Mom’s favorite saying was “God Willing”
Services are pending.
Pallbearers are Charles Bone, Martin Bone, Nathanial Cole, David Ortiz, Tony Bustos, and Henry “Hedge” Fernandez.
