Quick Meeting for Raton City Commission

Raton city commission met Tuesday evening April 8, 2025, for the first regular meeting of the month with a short agenda that began with three proclamations before handling the business part of the meeting.

Tim Gianulis, a retired art teacher from Denver is opening a new art place on south Second Street in the old Comcast building. He informed commissioners that it will be a community arts studio that can be used by anyone.  He noted that the Reed family has offered him a one-year lease at no cost to help get the venture up and running. On April 26, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. there will be an open house where blue sky ranch will help with the opening and have horses on hand for the kids to draw.

Commissioners approved the change of scope for the Cinco de Mayo celebration to be held May 3-4 which will now include additional street closure for a car show.  Commissioners also approved the event for the Raton Little League opening ceremonies that will be held on April 12, 2025, at the ball fields on South 3rd Street. They are requesting a street closure to help with the traffic during the opening ceremonies.

Commissioners approved Mayor Neil Segotta and Commissioner Lindé Schuster as the voting delegate and alternative for Raton at the New Mexico Municipal League 2025 annual conference district election. The meeting will be a virtual meeting on April 17, 2025.

Commissioners heard that there were no bids received on the electrical work for the Shuler electrical project and postponed the matter until a later date.

Commissioners acted on the proposal from DJ&A for the civil design work on the City Hall drainage project as part of the foundation stabilization project for city hall building. The cost of this proposal is $7,942.00.

Jason Phillips filling in for City Manager Rick Mestas reported that he and Mayor Segotta attended the MainStreet program in Philadelphia where the Raton Mainstreet program won a first-place award. Mainstreet Director Brenda Ferri will be on hand at the next meeting to give the commission a report on the award and what is next for the Raton Mainstreet program. The next regular City Commission meeting will be April 22, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Raton City Hall.

National Library week is April 6th -12th 2025, Commissioner Don Giacomo presented the proclamation for National Library week to Dennie Gum, Stephen Baker and Kevin Nolan Tuesday evening at the Raton City Commission meeting.  Link to Proclamation National Library Week
