In Loving Memory of Susan (Sue) Carole Elkin

Susan (Sue) Carole Elkin passed away unexpectedly in Pueblo, Colorado, on
February 2, 2025, at the age of 69. Susan was born in Springer, New Mexico, on
January 19, 1956, to her loving parents Leonard and Molly Knox. She grew up on her
family’s ranch in Maxwell, New Mexico. Susan spent many years as a member of the
4H club, and won a trip to Chicago for a sewing competition as well as many ribbons
at county and state fairs. She was on the first Maxwell girls’ basketball team, as well
as a cheerleader. After graduating from Maxwell High School in 1974, she went on to
obtain a Bachelor’s of Nursing from the University of New Mexico.. She ran track at
UNM set a record in the 50-yard hurdles. Susan later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico
Mexico with her daughter Sarah in 1990, where she would reside for the next nearly
30 years. Susan provided a fun and imaginative childhood for her daughter. She
loved holidays and always made them special for those around her, whether it was
Halloween, Easter, Christmas, or the Fourth of July. She went through great lengths to
inspire Sarah to believe in both Santa and the Easter bunny as a child, always
providing precious memories. Susan was known for her beautiful garden, which was always
filled with flowers and giant vegetables. She was an exceptionally talented artist,
leaving behind many paintings, which will be forever treasured by those who now
proudly hang them on their walls. Susan had a great af inity for animals, providing
a loving home to many dogs and cats throughout her life. She was of a generous
spirit and tried to help her family and friends in whatever ways she could. Susan had
a long and meaningful career as a dedicated and caring registered nurse. She won
numerous awards at the Santa Fe Indian Hospital, where she worked in the labor
and delivery department for the majority of her working life. After taking early
retirement due to health issues, she moved into an independent living community in
Pueblo, C.O. with her cat Minue. She enjoyed getting to know the other residents on
her floor. She also befriended caring staff members Eric from security and Olive from
Care Corner which delivered her medicine every month. It was during the final years
of her life that she found a strong sense of community on Twitter. Susan loved talking
to her online friends from all over the country and deeply appreciated their support
and good conversations. Susan is survived by her daughter, Sarah Elkin (partner,
Ben Pierce); brother, Michael Knox (wife, Christy) ; sisters, Teri and Patti Knox; uncle
Wayne Knox, Cousin (who she considered a sister,) Cindy Maldonado, beloved cat,
Minue and many friends she made throughout her life. Susan is predeceased by her
parents Leonard and Molly Knox; grandparents, Alma and Frank Hardway; and aunt
Inge Knox. Susan will be forever missed and warmly remembered by all those who
loved her.
