Gary Lee Grubelnik passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 24, 2025, in Raton, New Mexico at the age of 68. Gary is survived by his mother, Dorthy Leahy of Raton, NM; sister, Carol Grob of Fargo, ND; brother, Dale Grubelnik and wife Sherry of Lubbock, TX; children, Terri Hodge and husband Steve, Kip Grubelnik Frazer and husband Bob, Brook Grubelnik Olsen, Jessie Grubelnik Rutledge and husband Shane, Cassidy Byrd and husband Robert, Jim Grubelnik and wife Carrie, Nikki Amperan, and Garydale Grubelnik and wife Shelby. Many grandkids, including Mandy and Brody (Kip), Liam (Brook), Baron and Anderson (Jessie), Alexus, Megan, Lain, Harley (Cassidy), Brooke, Brenda, Blaine(Jim), Lacey, Dalley, Luke, Rylan, Destry(Nikki), Blakely, Sterling and Sutton(Garydale); as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Grubelnik of Raton, NM, stepfather, Harold Leahy of Raton, NM, and daughter, Mandy Grubelnik of San Diego, CA. Gary was born on May 7, 1956, in Raton, NM to Jim and Dorthy Grubelnik. He attended Raton ISD from 1962-1978, at which time he left to go work at Walsenburg Sand and Gravel. He raised cattle with his father and was a rodeo clown in the 80’s. Gary also guided various game hunts throughout his life. Gary worked in many trades throughout the years, but most of his career was spent as a skilled carpenter. Gary loved his children and grandchildren. His children remember him as a fun, loving and hard-working father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Gary was accomplished at detailed woodworking and raising show cattle. Gary was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting with family and friends. He was a skilled taxidermist who took pride in everything he did with an extreme attention to detail.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 11:00 AM, April 24, 2025, in the chapel at the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home in Raton, NM. Cameron Burk will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gary’s life.
