It is with sadness to announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend Mary Louise Luna on Saint Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025. Our mother was 97 years old and was born at the family ranch in San Jose, New Mexico to Carolina Griego and Samuel Lucero on April 10, 1927.
Our mother attended elementary school between San Jose, New Mexico, and St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Raton, New Mexico. Mary Louise lived a full life experiencing different occupations that interest her and worked mostly as a nurse aid at the hospital in Raton and at a nursing home facility in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Her last place of employment which was momentarily was with West Las Vegas Valley School working as a cafeteria server. With her loving and caring heart, our mother became a foster parent which resulted to adopting her son Adam Luna. Mary Louise loved to dance and enjoyed her Northern New Mexico Spanish music and western tunes. Her husband Patrick played his standard guitar and she volunteered their time to sing and play with the choir at the Catholic Church in Las Vegas and at the San Miguel del Vado Church in Ribera, New Mexico. They also performed at family and social gatherings. Our mother helped all her surrounding neighbors and friends within the village by offering them a ride into Las Vegas to get groceries or pay their bills. She loved to spend time with family and loved to cook for them. She made the best beans, chile, bread, tortillas, sopapillas, cakes, cookies, natillas, and to include other Spanish dishes as well as American foods. She loved to spend her time at the family ranch helping her brothers feed and care for their livestock. The ranch was so beautiful and peaceful to her that she suggested to her brothers and sisters on planning a family reunion which to this day is held every year. She believed this was a chance to socialize with relatives and friends of the family. Mary loved to crochet and made beautiful blankets and bedspreads. She also embroidered pillowcases and kitchen towels that she gave to family and friends as gifts. She made sure that her daughter’s made time with her to go shopping and eat lunch or dinner at a good restaurant, and to get a great haircut and style. We can’t forget to mention her love of traveling to the Santuario de Chimayo for her spiritual visits.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Patrick R. Luna. Parents, Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Lucero, Her biological children from her first husband LeRoy Gonzales and her son Patrick Gonzales who left this world just four months ago.
