James Patrick Doherty

( October 19, 1942 – February 2, 2025 )

James Patrick Doherty, a lifelong rancher and resident of Union County, died in Amarillo, Texas on February 2, 2025, at the age of 82.

Services are pending at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton.

James Patrick Doherty was born on October 19, 1942, in Raton, New Mexico. He was the youngest child of Dan Doherty, Sr. and Hazel (Lane) Doherty. Raised in Folsom, Jim was a third-generation rancher, a legacy started by his grandfather, Joe Doherty, who came to New Mexico from Ireland in the late 1800s, and that legacy continues today. He had a great appreciation for the land, for good cattle and horses, and had a tremendous love for his family. His sharp sense of humor and expressive laugh were gifts enjoyed by family and friends alike. Jim attended school in Folsom and Des Moines, graduating from Des Moines High School in 1960. He was very active in FFA, serving as the New Mexico State Vice President his senior year in high school. After high school, Jim attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he was a member of the rodeo team as a calf roper, and where he met his future bride, Sylvia Cooles. Jim and Sylvia were married in 1962, in Alpine. After Jim graduated with a degree in Business, Jim and Sylvia moved to Folsom to continue in the family ranching enterprise. They later moved to Clayton, which required a little bit longer commute to the ranch for Jim, but he didn’t mind unless there was a snowstorm. Jim loved to rope – first calves and then team roping – something he participated in for many years. He also had a passion for golf, both as a player and spectator. He really enjoyed being able to attend various PGA tournaments at the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth over the years. He was a member of the Clayton Golf Club and helped to establish a golf course for the community. Jim was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Dan Sr. and Hazel, his beautiful daughter, Shannon Brorby, his brother, Dan Doherty, Jr., and his sister, Elaine Kennedy.
