Fire Fighters from Raton Fire and Emergency Services and Colfax County Rapid Response were called to the 100 block of Hill Drive in east Raton about 3:15 p.m. Monday afternoon for a garage fire.

Upon arrival at 110 Hill Drive in east Raton fire fighters found a garage on the north side of the home owned by Gilbert Romero fully engulfed in flames producing a smoke plume that could be seen from most of Raton.

Fire Fighters quickly knocked the flames down and had the fire controlled in about 15 minutes. According to the home owner he had been welding in the shop when the phone rang and he went to answer the phone. When he came back out he heard a bang from inside the garage and the fire started. The exact cause of the fire is not fully known but rags or the welder are the suspected cause.

The garage is considered a total loss as is the classic pickup that was inside the garage.
