In Loving Memory of Samuel Gutierrez

Samuel Gutierrez

( October 2, 1942 – December 26, 2024 )

Samuel “Sammy” Gutierrez departed this earthly world to join his Heavenly Father, on December 26, 2024. With loved ones at his side, the Lord called him up and took him peacefully and gently.

Rosary will be recited at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton, New Mexico and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated after the Rosary at 1:30 PM, with Fr. Joji as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.

In his final days, he always tried to “lighten” things up; cracking jokes to any lucky recipient. From “Pluck my feathers” to “Pick my Peppers” he always seemed to see the “bright side” of things; no matter what. It was a blessing to receive the gift of his humor as he remained a jokester to the end and would often say, “Laughter is good medicine!”  Samuel “Sammy” Gutierrez was born on October 02, 1942. He was born in Sabinoso, New Mexico, (near Roy, NM) to Faustin and Frances “Sylveria” Gutierrez. He enlisted in the Army and would later return to marry his high school sweetheart, Vickie. They were married by Justice of the Peace on May 12, 1967, and by God’s grace would later receive the Holy Sacrament of Marriage in the Catholic Church on December 18, 2023 (the same evening his spouse received her last rites and seven days prior to her passing). A most beautiful gift only the Lord could grant.  At an early age, he learned the value of hard work and contributing to the household. After he returned from the Army, he became employed by Union County Feedlot and remained there until it closed down. He was a dedicated, hardworking, and loyal employee. Whatever the job entailed; he was up for the task. He had grit and there was never a job too difficult to handle. He was grateful to be working so that he could provide for his family a responsibility he never took lightly.  He would never allow himself to waiver or become complacent as he knew the importance of putting food on the table. He learned and grew together with his wife, Vickie and together they became “one” in all things. As time passed, his absolute true joy became apparent upon the birth of his grandchildren. All three were so special to him and he couldn’t wait to teach them how to fish, ride a bicycle in the street, and pull them along on sleds after a good snowfall. He exemplified what it was to be a Grandpa; patient, kind, loving, compassionate, and loads of fun!! In their eyes, Grandpa Sam was the best – truly one of a kind.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Faustin and Silveria (Lucero) Gutierrez, his three brothers Phillip Gutierrez, Johnny Alton Milton Gutierrez, and Eloy Gutierrez, his sisters, Mary Ann Davis, Virginia Martinez, Josephine Gutierrez-Perea and Evangelista Gutierrez-Christian.
