In Loving Memory of John Edward Gonzales Sr 

John Edward Gonzales Sr – December 13, 2024

John “Juano” Gonzales Sr., 82 of Trinidad, Colorado, entered the kingdom of heaven on Friday, December 13th, 2024. He died peacefully in his sleep. His sudden passing brings a strong sense of loss to his family and friends, but also a sense of peace, as he rejoins the Lord and his family members that have passed before him. John was born in Trinidad on June 24, 1942, to Abenico and Mary Gonzales. As the oldest of 8 children, his siblings always looked up to him for guidance.

He was united in marriage to Betty Ann Martinez on April 11, 1964. Through her, John found salvation in Jesus Christ and remained steadfast in the Lord until his last day on this earth. He was a member of several churches throughout the years and lastly to the First Christian Church. He was always eager to participate in the annual Easter and Christmas programs. He was an avid sports enthusiast. His favorite teams were the Denver Broncos and New York Yankees. If you saw him around town, he was always sporting a Bronco or Yankee hat. Because of his love of sports, baseball in particular, he coached Little League and Women’s Softball teams for many years as well as playing on a men’s fast pitch team himself.  He taught the love of baseball to his Brother Jim, then to his sons, and then continued on to his grandchildren. He worked for the City of Trinidad, in the Park and Recreation Department for 34 years until his retirement.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Abenico and Mary Gonzales, brothers, Benjamin “Chico” and Ronald Gonzales, sisters, Elaine Gonzales and Victoria Grout, mother-in-law, and father-in-law, Sam and Angelina Martinez. He is survived by his wife, Betty Gonzales; his sons, John (Elvira) and Steve (Crystal) Gonzales; daughter, Beulah “BJ” (Troy) Maes; grandchildren, Megan (Tony Deese), Monique (Ronnie) Watters, Justin (Sydnee Waller) Roberts, Jesse (Anna Lin) Roberts, Anisha (Cody) Frohn, Juay Gonzales; two great-grandchildren Anniah and Isaac Frohn; brother, James Gonzales, sister, Veronica Gonzales (Ron Pouncey)and aunt, Dorothy Brinkley from Tennessee”

and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Active Pallbearers will be his Grandsons, Justin Roberts & Jesse Roberts, and his nephews, Ben Gonzales, Jason Grout, Jimmie Gonzales, and Marcus Pouncey.  Public viewing will be on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Comi Funeral Home Chapel from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  Funeral Services will be on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the First Christian Church at 200 S. Walnut St.

Interment will follow at the Trinidad Mason Cemetery.
