Ebben Erwin “Red” Holt

Ebben Erwin “Red” Holt passed away peacefully at Colfax General Long Term
Care in Springer, New Mexico on November 6, 2024, at the age of 94. He was
born in Tarpley, Texas on November 8, 1929, to Little Joe Holt and Ida Sophie
Marquis Holt. He was the third child of four children.
Red grew up on a small ranch near Uvalde, Texas, and graduated from Uvalde
High School in 1947. He served in the US Army during the Korean War
from 1951-1952. His early work history included cross-country truck driving and
road construction from 1954-1962. He then spent 26 years with the New Mexico
Department of Transportation, where he retired in 1988 as the Equipment
Manager for District 4.
After relocating to Cimarron, NM, Red worked for more than 20 years as a
mechanic and relief bus driver for the local bus company. He was especially
proud of his lifelong hobby as a “shade tree mechanic”.
Red was initiated into the Masonic Order in 1975 in Las Vegas, NM, and
remained an active member for nearly 50 years.
Red is survived by his wife of 18 years, Ethel, also a resident of Colfax General;
daughter Patsy and husband Rob VanAndel of the Netherlands; grandson Mark
VanAndel and partner Lisa; great-grandchildren Sylvan and Fiora Van Andel;
granddaughter Fiona VanAndel and partner Jogchum all of the Netherlands. Red
is also survived by daughter Evelyn Malaney and granddaughter Tammy
Malaney of Cimarron; grandson Jason Malaney and wife Tracey; great-grandchildren Jacob and Jocelyn Malaney all of Albuquerque; great-granddaughter Analiese Malaney of Las Cruces, NM, and bonus great-granddaughters Adeline and Abigail Yates of Springer, NM.
Red was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, his wife of 40 years, Uarda,
and son-in-law Jack Malaney. Numerous other relatives and extended family
also survive.
