Raton cross country hosted the District 2 Class A/2A cross country district meet Friday afternoon November 1st, 2024 at the Raton Golf Course and Raton’s Kalynn Salazar blistered the home course finishing first overall in the girl’s varsity race with a time of 22:26.14 for the 3.1 (5K) course. A sophomore, Salazar finished 32 seconds ahead of Pecos’ Maria Roybal with a total of 44 ladies entered and competing for a chance to go to the state meet at Albuquerque Academy next week.
In the girl’s division it was Pecos finishing 1st, with Native American Community Academy ( NACA) earning 2nd, 3rd Place Cimarron, 4th Place Raton and 5th Place Estancia. All five teams will qualify for the State Championship with Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Des Moines and Roy sending individual runners to compete, but did not have enough competitors to make a full team.
In the Boy’s division, there were 67 total who took to the course and it was Pecos also taking the District Championship Banner home with 1st Place including a 1-2-3 sweep of the first three individual slots led by Brandyn Encinias 17:20.42, 2nd Place NACA, 3rd Place Cimarron, 4th Place Menaul, 5th Place Raton and 6th Place Maxwell with all 6 teams headed for the finals.
Schools attending the meet in District 2 Class A were Cimarron, Des Moines, Maxwell, Menaul, Native American Community Academy and Roy. From District 2AA; Estancia, Pecos, Raton, Santa Rosa and Tucumcari. The top six teams will compete at the state meet next weekend in Albuquerque.
