Second Suspect in Shooting arrested

Colfax County Sheriff Deputies arrested Enriquez Cortez Thursday September 12, 2024, in connection with the shooting that took place in Raton’s east side back on August 24, 2024.

According to the press release Deputies received word where they could find Cortez. Deputies quickly responded to the location in question and after a short standoff they established contact with Cortez and were able to take him into custody with out incident.

According to court records the shooting incident was a dispute between Cortez and Jeremy Licon who was arrested earlier in connection with the shooting incident. The dispute started in the area of Mora Avenue and South 1st Street in Raton. Licon was driving a grey pickup that struck another vehicle at that time Licon pulled out a weapon and discharged it at the other vehicle. Raton Police did find spent shell casing in that area as they were dispatched to investigate vehicle accident.

Cortez was wanted on an active arrest warrant that included Aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, driving on the wrong side of roadway and unregistered off-highway motor vehicle. In connection with the shooting incident Cortez has been charged with receipt, transportation or possession of a firearm or destructive device by certain person(Felon), Aggravated assault (deadly weapon) and shooting at or from a motor vehicle no great bodily harm.
