Colfax County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday, July 2 released the identity of the man who was killed on Monday, July 1 in a collision with an Amtrak train as Lowell Stanfill. No further details were released as the investigation continues.
Around 10:55 a.m. Monday morning July 1, 2024, a red car driven by a single male struck the southbound Amtrak train on Highway 555 west of Raton between the first and second locomotive.
Colfax County Sheriff’s office and Raton Fire and Emergency Services responded to the accident and found a single passenger stuck in the vehicle still alive. After extraction, the individual was transported to Miners Colfax Medical Center for treatment where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, the individual succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Lowell Stanfill of Raton, NM
The Amtrak train had only minor damage and was inspected by BNSF personnel and was reported to be allowed to proceed on to its destination, but was still sitting on the track waiting for the go-ahead at 3:30 pm.
Colfax County Sheriff’s office is investigating the accident and we will update the story as soon as we have additional information from them.
