Raton School Board Met Monday June 17 in a short meeting to go over policy and financial reports.

Board members talked about the use of cell phones in class and during the school day. Part of the problem comes when a cell phone is confiscated the parent will come to the school and take possession of the phone and immediately return it to the student. At issue is using their cell phones to video and then post the video to social media especially to video fights and other disturbances.

The board discussed cyber security during the board member reports and how it will relate to the school district. More will be discussed with the school IT professionals over the summer.

The agenda included a comment period for Title I, II and IV. RHS Principal Jolene Starr talked about each of the items including Idea B. Title one is used for salaries for Title I staff and other expenses.

Title II covers the mentorship program as well as principal and teacher professional development. Title IV is still in limbo as there are problems with the program web site so the district doesn’t know how much is budgeted for the program or exactly what it will cover.

Information on Idea B is still up in the air as the applications have not been released.

The school is working on Fine Arts Application to obtain funding for those programs. Board members approved the financial report and budget adjustments.

Board members have read over the SPED Handbook, heard about the few changes, and approved the handbook. Board members approved the second reading of Policy Advisories:

Policy Advisory No. 238 -BBA-Board Powers and Responsibilities – Second Read

Policy Advisory No. 239 – BE-School Board Meetings – Second Read
