The Roy/Mosquero Lady Blue had the tables turned on them in the semi-finals of the girls NM Class A Tournament on Thursday, March 14th. Fort Summer/House applied the defensive full-court pressure early, which is usually a staple of Lady Blue ball and blanketed Silvi Baca to disrupt the flow and put Roy/Mosquero on their heels early and then withstood a late comeback charge to send the Vixens into the championship with a 51 – 47 victory.
Roy/Mosquero hit the first shot for the lead out of the gate, but the Vixens hit a couple of threes and converted turnovers into 14 points in a row before Blue could score again. The Vixens led 17-8 at the end of the first and would lead by 11 at halftime.
Roy/Mosquero was cold from the field hitting only 1 of 13 from beyond the arc and missing several in close in the paint and lay ups on forced turnovers and trailed by 16 with 5 minutes left in the third. The deficit would be 13 going into the final 8 minutes and the pedigree of the defending champion and the coaching of Blair Clavel, had the Lady Blue making one final run behind the solid defensive play of Baca and offensive punch of Arantza Covarrubius.
The only senior on the squad, Covarrubias, had a team high 12, with Sylvi Baca getting 10; Nora Crisp had 8; Natalie Smith with 7; Sophia DeHerrera had 6; and Tayla Proffitt with 4. Coach Clavel played all on the roster including Reagan Doherty and Constanza Covarrubias, and was assisted on the bench by Misti Gutierrez.
Roy/Mosquero finished the year 25 – 3 and was a perfect 10-0 and undefeated District 5A regular season and also and a Cowbell Tournament Championship.
