The Roy/Mosquero Lady Blue defense helped to forced 47 turnovers and the offense scored 40 points from them to roll to a 55 – 18 win over Corona /Vaughn and earn a berth in the Class A Girls Semifinals in the NM State Basketball Championships.
Played at Bernalillo High School Gym on Wed., March 13, the defending champion from last year, Roy/Mosquero gave notice that they were deserving of their #1 seeding in this year’s tournament. After surviving a scare in the first round victory over Animas at home, coach Blair Clavel, unleashed a smothering defense that neutralized Corona/Vaughn’s 6’5″ Harper Dunn holding her to 9 points. Only a Freshman, Dunn blocked 9 Blue shots.
Roy/Mosquero was led in scoring by junior Silviana Baca with 16. Silvi led all scorers and pulled down 5 rebounds with a couple of steals. Freshman Tayla Proffitt was also in double figures with 10, Arantza Covarrubius contributed 8, Natalie Smith had 7, Nora Crisp with 6, Sophia DeHerrera with 4, and Reagan Doherty and Constantza Covarruibius each had 2.
Roy/Mosquero will next play Fort Sumner/House which fought for a one point win over Magdalena. The Class A semifinal game will be at Rio Rancho Events Center and is set to tip off at 11:30 am on Thursday, March 14.
