Weda “Dena” Baird
( December 8, 1942 – February 29, 2024 )
Weda “Dena” (Bledsoe) Baird was born on December 8, 1942, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She passed away on February 29, 2024, after a long-fought battle against Parkinson’s, as well as other health issues. Dena was only 81 years of age.
Dena is survived by her loving husband, Clifford M. “Buzz” Baird; her daughter Shawmarie Baird-Jeffery and her husband Kelly of Mooringsport, Louisiana; many wonderful nephews, nieces, and cousins, and countless loyal friends and extended family members. Dena was predeceased by her father H.H. “Blacky” Bledsoe and Mother Willie Ruby (Price) Bledsoe.
Dena graduated from High School in Lovington, NM, and then studied business at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Dena later met the love of her life, Buzz, at a rodeo in Santa Rosa, New Mexico shortly before Buzz was drafted into the U.S. Army. Once he returned home stateside, the two married on November 13, 1965, in Santa Rosa. Their adventures took them to various parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and California. Eventually settling in Ignacio, Colorado, together they built a beautiful home and small cattle ranch. Ranch life brought a love of critters, both large and small. She spent years riding cutting horses; helping Buzz with calving heifers; showing rabbits; and supporting Shawmarie through a myriad of 4H and FFA projects.
She worked as an administrative secretary for the Ignacio School District for many years. Countless young faces were her daily reminder of why she enjoyed her career. Dena never met a stranger, and most would agree that she was big-hearted and vibrant, and radiated light. She accepted everyone with an open heart, open arms, and a perpetual smile. She had immense passion for her family, her spiritual beliefs, and the cowboy way of life. Dena chose simple over flashy and was deeply sentimental.
She was an exemplary mother, wife, and human being. She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen in her care for her family and extended family.
In 2006, Buzz and Dena settled in Clayton, New Mexico. She worked at Five States Livestock Auction for a handful of years until health issues forced her to stop working. Their years here have brought them many cherished friends.
Even near the end, she found a way to brighten the room with a big smile for Buzz. Dena will be remembered for her warm smile, her twinkling eyes, and her fervor for life and all its opportunities. We love you, Dena.
Her departure comes as a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by her entire family and countless others who loved her deeply in her wide network of community. The family deeply appreciates your support during this time and asks that instead of flowers, please consider contributing to an animal rescue facility of your choice, in honor of Dena.
A memorial celebration for Dena will be held in Colorado later this year. We will notify all friends and family when those arrangements have been made.
