Raton Fire Fighters and Colfax County Rapid Response were called out to 412 Gold in South Raton about 5:30 a.m. for a structure fire that totally destroyed a single wide trailer house.

Fire Chief Anthony Burk noted that the structure was fully involved upon their arrival and with winds gusting to 50 mph and pushing embers to the east Burk requested help. Colfax County District 8 units arrived and were placed on structure protection for the homes across Gold Street from the blaze.

Fire units from Cimarron, French Tract, Maxwell and Philmont were requested for mutual aid and were put on additional structure protection and wildland fire protection in case embers flew into the dry grass and sparked a grass fire to the east of the York Canyon Subdivision.

Chief Burk said the resident Adam Mitchel of the house told fire fighters that a wood burning stove had caught the ceiling and roof on fire where high winds fanned the fire and quickly spread to the rest of the structure. Fire fighters were on scene well past 8:00 a.m. doing mop up. Burk noted personnel from Raton Natural Gas, Raton Public Service, Raton Street Dept, Raton Police Dept, Colfax County SO and NM State Police assisted with the fire.
