On Friday February 9, 2024, at around 5:21 p.m., the New Mexico State Police, Colfax Sheriff’s Deputies and Raton Fire and Emergency Services responded to a two-vehicle crash, involving a commercial motor vehicle and a Dodge Ram Pickup in Colfax County, east of Raton.
The initial investigation indicated that a 2022 Ram pick-up truck, driven by Kiustyn Martin De La Torre, 41, of Florida was traveling east on U.S. Highway 64/87, near milepost 355, at a slow rate of speed, with emergency flashers activated. For unknown reasons the pick-up truck was rear ended by a 2024 semi-truck driven by Talon Green, 29, of Texas.
Four of the five occupants of the pick-up truck were transported to MCMC in Raton. An infant in the pick-up truck sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The driver of the semi-truck was also transported to MCMC for minor injuries.
US 64/87 east bound had to be closed while State Police investigated the accident. At one point traffic was being turned around at a cross over just west of the accident but the number of semi trucks made that difficult to do so Colfax SO deputies closed east 64/87 at the Raton City Limits until the congestion could be cleared.
Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor according to State Police. Seatbelts were worn by all and the infant was in a car seat. This crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
