Raton Police were called to the 400 block of North Fourth Street in Raton Monday afternoon February 5, 2024 for a report of shots fired where they found Abe Alvarado in front of the house he was staying at and reporting that he had been fired upon and returned fire at a Maroon colored car.

The incident began as a result of harassing posts on Facebook by some individuals and culminated in a maroon vehicle pulling up in the alleyway of the 400 block between Fourth and Third Streets. Shots were fired at Alvarado, he returned fire then retreated inside the dwelling once he ran out of ammo. The vehicle occupied several times was later found on Larsen Street by Raton Police. With assistance from Colfax County Sheriff Deputies and State Police several individuals were taken into custody.

Casings from the shooting were found at the house, in the alleyway and two casings on the front windshield of the car. The driver of the car would not give consent to search the vehicle, so the vehicle was impounded, and the owner of the vehicle later gave permission to search the vehicle where no weapons were located.

Charges will be filed against at least three of the individuals and as this is still an active investigation Police Chief John Garcia noted there will likely be more charges forth coming. Charges being filed so far include attempted murder, shooting at a dwelling and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

KRTN will add more to this story as additional details become available.
