Raton hosted Des Moines Tuesday January 16, for a three game night of basketball in Tiger Gym where the JV Tiger boys were the only Raton team to come away with a win.
In the JV game Des Moines had the lead at the end of the first quarter and was up by one going into half time. It was the third quarter where Raton’s Lorenzo Anaya, Joshua Lopez and Logan Elliot shined and dropped in 25 points for the Tigers while Des Moines could only muster nine points for the quarter which put Raton well ahead of the Demons. At the final buzzer it was the third quarter that gave Raton the win 47-33.
The girls took to the court next where Des Moines Katy Ward started the game controlling the tip off. From there the Lady Demons simply dominated the Lady Tigers holding them to single digit scores throughout the game. The Raton team is made up of six Freshman, two 8th graders a sophomore and junior who have shown a lot of improvement since the beginning of the season. They will begin district play next week in Santa Fe against St Mikes.
The boys varsity game was a back and forth match with Raton going to the free throw line eight times in the first quarter to stay within a point of Des Moines. With the new free throw rules it’s unusual to see a team go to the free throw line a lot. Take the second quarter as an example where Raton didn’t visit the charity line once while Des Moines added to their point total with nine trip to the line making seven of the nine shots. Demon Noah Johnson got hot in the first quarter and scoring 15 points six from the free throw line and lead 31-22 going into halftime.
Raton head coach Ted Kamp made some adjustments at half time and shut Johnson down in the second half allowing only one three pointer by senior. It was the second and third quarters where Des Moines dominated and widen the lead. Yet at one point in the third Raton battled back from a 12 point deficit to a three point shortfall. The Des Moines took off again and finished off the third quarter with a 51-36 lead. Raton didn’t give up but just couldn’t break that 10 point lead and as the final buzzer sounded it was a 10 point difference 62-52. The boys will host St Mikes next Tuesday January 23 to begin their district play.
