Once again Firefighters with Raton Fire and Emergency Services and Colfax County Rapid Response were called out at 9:13 a.m. to a blaze Sunday morning (11-26-2023) in southeast Raton in the 1200 block of East 5th Street.
A residence at 1214 East 5th Street was billowing black smoke as fire fighters arrived on scene Sunday morning to find an out building that had caught fire was fully engulfed and had spread to the single wide trailer next to it. The fire quickly spread and soon had moved into the neighbor’s shed to the north of the original structure due to its proximity to the main fire.
As fire fighters continued the mop up operation small flames could be seen in different parts of the structures with the main structure continuing to smolder and exude white smoke by 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
According to Chief Anthony Burk the fire was caused by an electric heater that was in the shed and had been knocked over. It is unknown if the heater was equipped with a safety switch or not.
When I heard the explosion, my clock fell of the wall. I thought that one of my cars exploded!! When I open my door, I seen my neighbors back yard on fire. I am thankful that my next-door neighbor is Ok and well. Thank you, Raton fire fighters, for showing up fast and putting out fire! I’m glad none of neighbor’s tree went up with the fire. Thank GOD that no is hurt its a Merical!
