Raton Fire and Emergency Services along with Colfax County Rapid Response members were called out to a fire in the 700 block of North Second Street Saturday morning November 18, 2023 about 9:30 a.m.
Upon arrival at the scene they found a garage behind 719 North Second Street to be fully engulfed by flames. Inside the garage were a couple of vehicles along with a side by side. The flames from the garage threatened other nearby structures. The rapid response of fire fighters kept other buildings in the area out of harms way but the fire expanded into a neighbors garage with the loss of much of the contents inside. Two cars and a couple of out buildings associated with the garage were lost.
Cause of the fire is being blamed on a mechanical failure while charging batteries on a side by side vehicle.
