A local contractor, KC& MC Services is being recognized for excellence in reclamation work done at the York Canyon Mine west of Raton, New Mexico. The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department Mining and Minerals Division has awarded the “2023 Excellence in Reclamation Award” to three companies, Chevron Mining Incorporated, Trihydro Corporation, and a Raton company KC&MC Services, LLC.
The New Mexico Mining Association held its Annual Conference at the Sandia Resort in Albuquerque on August 24, 2023. Awards were announced and given out during their awards luncheon. The “2023 Excellence in Reclamation” was awarded to Chevron Mining Corporation, Tryhydro Corporation, and Raton’s own KC&MC Services, LLC. for their project “The Monument Channel with Pharoah Steps”, which consisted of using the Pharoah Step procedure to reclaim an extremely steep and wide channel that was creating a major erosion problem at the York Canyon Mine. It combined the use of natural rock outcroppings along with rock that was placed along the channel to armor the bottom and sides of the channel.
Accepting the award were Tyrell Hulet, of Tryhydro Corporation and Keith Cervo, owner of KC&MC Services, LLC. of Raton. This project demonstrates the success of mine reclamation when industry and agencies work creatively together. Congratulations to the three companies receiving the award.
