In Loving Memory of Nancy Lee Robertson UPDATE

 

 

Long-time Raton resident Nancy Robertson died July 10 at the age of 90 in Loveland, Colorado.   , born June 16, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA, second daughter of Jean Caywood Roy and Robert Hugh Robertson, died Monday, July 10, 2023, aged 90, in Loveland, CO.  She was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Sarah Jean (Sally) Foster, and her beloved husband, George Gordon Robertson.  She is survived by children Jean Lemmon and husband, Bruce, of Loveland, CO; Andrew (Andy) Robertson and wife, Helen, of Albuquerque, NM; and Margaret (Maggie) Linsky and husband Leo, of Charleston, WV; her brother-in-law, Dr. John H. Robertson, of Raton, NM; grandchildren Emilia Robertson, George Lemmon, Cameron Lemmon, Elizabeth Record, and Sarah Record; and their wonderful families whom she loved very much.

She was an exchange student, and she enjoyed lifelong traveling, visiting Mexico, Canada, Europe and the British Isles, South America, China, and Japan.  She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, majoring in English.  In 1954 she married Gordon, and they settled in Raton, NM to raise their children.

Nancy was an anthropologist, historian, genealogist, and author. Her collection of maps, petroglyph photographs, church and cemetery records, and documents pertaining to Raton, Colfax County, and New Mexico can be viewed in the Nancy Robertson Collection at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage. She may be remembered for helping people with genealogical and historical research at the Raton Public Library, giving sailboat rides to boy and girl scouts on Lake Maloya, teaching English as a second language, and by her legendary outspokenness.

When (future New Mexico Governor) Bill Richardson was campaigning for state representative, she asked him to help tourism in northern New Mexico by designating the Santa Fe Trail as a National Historic Trail.  On January 6, 1987, he introduced House Rule 240 to the 100th Congress, and the bill was passed.

In memory of Nancy Robertson, the family suggests a gift to a library, museum, or historical organization of your choice.  Graveside services for Nancy Robertson will be held on Saturday, September 9th at 11 AM in the family plot at Fairmont Cemetery in Raton with pastor Siobhan Croto officiating.
