The Luna Community College Preschool in partnership with the Luna Foundation recently applied for and received a $10,000 grant from the Las Vegas New Mexico Community Foundation for a greenhouse that will be assembled behind the preschool building on the Luna campus.
The purpose of the Greenhouse Growing Project is to have a place where the children can be active participants in the farm-to-table process.
For three summers, the students have participated in planting pumpkins, lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes in outdoor raised beds. The students then participated in harvesting the vegetables to eat and for experiential learning, e.g. veggie stamps, seed roasting, and counting, and comparison contrast.
In addition to the children using the greenhouse as experiential learning, families will also be invited to participate in planting and gardening with their children throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Luna’s preschool plans to have semi-annual plant sales open to the community so the community can engage with the children and their gardens.
