Ted Sandoval Jr.

With heavy hearts, we are sad to announce the sudden passing of Ted Sandoval Jr. on July 2, 2023, in Raton, NM. Ted was born on February 25, 1950, in Springer, New Mexico, to Ted Sandoval Sr. and Betty Sandoval, their oldest child and only son. In his early life, Ted lived in Cimarron and Roy, New Mexico, and moved to Raton during his senior year of high school. That is where he met the love of his life JoAnn at Roy’s Drive-In. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1968, where he would become a helicopter mechanic and crew chief in the helicopter division. He would serve a tour in Vietnam from 1969-1970. Upon returning from Vietnam, he married JoAnn on April 18, 1970, in Raton. From there they moved to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While still enlisted, he attended college in Denver, Colorado to become an auto mechanic. In 1972 he would be honorably discharged. Ted returned to Raton where he was employed with Hollingsworth Motors as a mechanic. In 1973 his first son Steven was born. Ted then moved to Albuquerque New Mexico with his family in 1974 where he worked for Ceco as a truck driver for two years. They returned back to Raton to go into business with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ray and Francis McCarty at the Shell Station on 2nd Street. In 1977 his son Donnie was born. In that same year, Ted and his dad Ted Sr. would open up Sandoval’s Auto Repair. In 1983 his son Albert was born. Ted and JoAnn would then take over Sandoval’s Auto Repair as the owners in 1989. In 2019 Ted and JoAnn entered retirement and his son Steven and wife Veronica Sandoval became the owners of Sandoval’s Auto Repair. Throughout the many years that Ted and JoAnn owned Sandoval’s, he would acquire many lifelong friendships.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents Ted Sr. and Betty Sandoval, sister and brother-in-law Carol and Albert Garcia, mother-in-law and father-in-law Pricilla and Augustine Trujillo, sisters-in-law Mary-Francis McCarty, Mary King, Carmen Castillo, brothers-in-law, Chris Trujillo, and Gilbert Trujillo. Ted is survived by his loving wife of fifty-three years, JoAnn, his sisters Betty Jean Evans and husband JB, JoEllen Owerko and husband John, brother-in-law Ray Mondragon, his sons Steven and wife Veronica, Donnie, and wife Tracy, Albert, and wife Jamie, grandchildren April Sanchez (Carlos), Andrew Grine (Justin), Heather Sandoval, Rachael Sandoval, Nicholas Sandoval, David Sandoval, Maurina Montoya, Vivianna Montoya, Jayden Sandoval, great-grandchildren Xaiver Martinez, Ashlynn Martinez, Azilayah Jo Arguello, and Tayanna Arguello. As well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ted was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved more than anything to get together with his family. He was a well-respected businessman who was extremely hardworking, dependable, and knowledgeable. He taught his children and anyone who was around him how to work just the same. He was the world’s biggest Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan even if he couldn’t name a player on the team. Ted is deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers are his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Friday, July 28, 2023, at St. Patrick/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raton, New Mexico Recited by the Legion of Mary at 11:00 am followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am at St. Patrick/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Fr. Bill Woytavich as the Celebrant Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
