Severe Weather Topples Power Poles Near Springer Electric Substation Causing Lengthy Blackout

Severe weather including tornado warnings, torrential rain, a hypnotizing electrical storm and some golf ball-sized hail hit Northeastern New Mexico and Southeastern Colorado on Thursday night, July 13 with one powerful gust snapping six electric poles near the Springer Electric Cooperatives substation near Springer and plunging Springer, Wagon Mound and Ocate into darkness overnight.

Springer Electric crews and the Town of Springer Field Crew worked all night and power was restored for most customers by 4 pm on July 14.

Damaged roofs and cars, plus some neighborhoods were littered with limbs and debris, plus it was reported a large plate glass window was blown out of Jesperson’s Antiques in the downtwon area.

Springer Mayor Boe Lopez put out a specal thank you to Springer Electric Linemen and the Town’s Field Crew and the Town of Springer’s Facebook Page said, “We would like to thank Springer Electric and the Field Crew for working diligently throughout the night and day to get everyone’s power back working. It was a pretty hot day and these crew members did a great job in the heat. Once again thank everyone for your patience and understanding.”

The Town of Springer had just gone through another utilities challenge on Wednesday, July 12 when a water line break necessatated water for the whole town being shutoff from 1:30 to approx 5:30 pm.
