Janet Hoy and Margaret Query may be from a small town in New Mexico, but the pair didn’t let the other 17,000 women who participated in the USBC Women’s Championship Bowling Tournament in Las Vegas, NV intimidate them as the pair finished second in the doubles competition in the Topaz Division in the Tournament that concluded July 1.
The Maxwell residents have enjoyed league bowling for many years and have competed on a regular basis in both Raton, starting at the Spur Lanes and now atTrinidad Lanes. For Hoy, it was the first time she had participated in the Women’s USBC Championship although she was set to go in 2020 and did not attend. For Query, she had been to the Women’s Championships before, but for both, it will be hard to top this experience. Their combined score of 934 stood atop the leaderboard for much of the 71-day tournament but was overtaken by a team from Chicago and Cleveland which rolled a 958 in the final days.
Both earned $818 for their efforts and Hoy bowled a 204 in her third game of doubles and also finished 51st in All Events.
Their team called, Happy Rolling the Ball also finished in the money in the Sapphire Division and consisted of Marlene Brown of Folsom and Peggy Sanchez of Hoehne. Sanchez also earned some cash back in her singles effort.
Hoy said she has always loved bowling and bowled with her husband Charles for many years and will continue to bowl as long as she can.
