Gilbert L. Sanchez, a retired Chief Boatswain Mate of the US Navy and a much-loved member of his community, passed away on May 3, 2023, at the age of 77. He was born on June 11, 1945, in Trinidad, Colorado, to Joe Sanchez and Rose Torres.
Gilbert graduated from Trinidad High School and went on to serve in the Navy as a boatswain mate, achieving the rank of Chief Boatswain Mate before retiring. He then pursued higher education at Trinidad State Junior College, earning an associate’s degree in Business Administration. Gilbert was also a proud member of the Elks organization and was known in his town for his skills as a prominent and funny barber.
Gilbert was a loving brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, as well as camping, fishing, and traveling. He is survived by his siblings Lucy Ruybal (Lester), Mary Mitchell (Jack), Judy Tougas (Reggie), George Sanchez (Lori), Ray Sanchez, JoAnn Tafoya (James), Grace Garcia (Steve), and his daughter Temre Aragon, grandchildren Chris Sanchez (Kohi) and Marissa Aragon, great-grandchildren Kylie Sanchez and Christopher Sanchez Jr., and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A viewing will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Comi Funeral Home. A service including a Rosary will take place on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at noon, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church.
Interment will follow at
the Trinidad Catholic Cemetery with Graveside Service conducted by US Naval Honor Guard.
